Go to a Mercury Dealer and they will givya the rite stuff..comes in BIG toothpaste tube. Remove upper plug first then lower to drain. Let drain for about 15-20 minutes. Cut tip of tube off and stuff into lower hole and squeeze till oil comes out top hole. Keep constant pressure on tube as to not let it suck air by relaxing grip. Put plug in top hole first before removing tube tip. then quickly put lower plug in..Walla! Done!

GET THE PUMP KIT- MUCH EASIER AND EFFICIENT. The tooth paste tube is an exercuse in frustration .

The Sporting Goods department at Wal-Mart is where I buy Pennzoil lower unit lube in the pump bottle (qt) at a good price.

When changing lower unit gear oil I first remove the bottom (fill) screw. This allows the gear oil to drain slowly. I closely examine the oil as it starts to drain. Any contaminates, such as water, will settle to the bottom and show up when you first start to drain.

After checking for comtaminates (few seconds) I open the vent screw and let 'er rip. :)

Be sure and get some new vent and drain screw gaskets. They're cheap insurance.

After you fill it up, let it drain for a second before re-inserting the lower drain plug. This will allow a little room for expansion. (this is also in the instructions).
