Merc 260 not reaching proper RPM and power

Hi. I am hoping someone has a clear idea that matches one of the many hunches I have about my engine. I don't want to start tearing everything apart to find a simple problem. Here goes:
1. Merc 350/260hp stated to run at 4200-4600 rpm in the repair book. Mine runs 3800-3900.
2. I have a '85 Chris Craft Scorpion, (like the Mach 1 Condor, or Nova, and enless other styles.) Comparable boats at the marina are running mid to high 40mph's. Last season, I started out with a stainless 14.25x19, and was running around 45-46mph at beginning of the season. A month later I was running 40mph. I ding'd the stainless, replaced it with 14.25x19 aluminum, and dropped to 38. This is understandable, but I have never gotten my rpm's over 4000 yet.
3. I tried a 14.25x17, and I gained almost 2000 rpm's, bringing me back to 3800rpm, but dropped my speed down to 34mph.

OK....Now this year...I am back with the aluminum 14.25x19. I run 37-38 mph, (these are all GPS numbers,) at 3700-3800 rpm's. It takes quite a while to get out of the hole, and if I have four three other people in the boat, at least one of them HAS to join me at the windshield, or it will never fall onto plane. I almost feel like the throttle cable stops before the carb's WOT, but it is not the case. I removed the line, and it was as far as the carb would go also.

This 350/260 Merc. was replaced a few years back, and sounds like it runs like a top. I did a tune-up this spring. Last year I did run into some problems with the module in the distributor. It wouldn't fire under load properly, so I cleaned the contacts of a little corrosion, and it ran fine after that.

My suspected causes: 1.carb (which is a 4bbl Weber) just sucks...(no pun) 2. Intake gasket has a small leak somewhere 3. That module needs a replacement instead of a cleaning. 4. I'm biffed, and I should just suck up the fact that I have the slowest scorpion out there..hehehe.

Any help on ideas would be great.

Oh yeah..one more thing. I was re-greasing the U-Joints this spring, and I noticed that the shaft seamed awfully hard to turn. Now, I have never turned a Merc shaft before, so I don't know what it is suppossed to feel like, but it was a two-handed event, and you could hear what I am guessing was the impeller groaning. I did have the lower unit replaced last year. Is it supposed to be that hard to turn the shaft for the outdrive?

Thanks,
-Gary

Gary,

Sounds like prop to me. How are you doing your testing? Where I come from, the testing procedure should be on calm water, one person in the boat, 1/4 tank of gas and WOT. At that point you should be at you power band 4200-4400 RPM. For every 500 RPM off of that range you should go down 2" in pitch and from there you can cut down the diameter size to fine tune the prop to your liking. If that works then you should have solved your need for a second party to get it to plane. How about trim tabs - are they functioning properly? We had a 24' Sea Ray that lived at Lake Tahoe in 6500 feet elevation that ran a 15 pitch prop - at sea level it ran a 21 pitch prop and was noticeably faster. Unfortunately to get it to run properly and get out of the hole alright, you should probably ignore your top speed...it's all obout the RPM's.

Re: Merc 260 not reaching proper RPM and power

I did think for a little while that it had to be the prop., but the first time in the water last year, I got more rpm's, and a hell of a lot more mph. It seems that it is running slower and slower as time goes by, rpm and mph wise. The problem that I face is two-fold, one: I need better performance to be happy, two: It WAS faster at the beginning of the season last year, and comparable boats are telling me they are running 10-15 mph faster with the same prop that I have. I've seen them yank two skiers out of the water faster than I get on plane with just me in the boat.
I am pretty well convinced that I have the right propeller. The best way that I can describe it, is put a 1/2" wooden block under your gas pedal, and then try to drive sporty. It just feels like the engine is saying more, but the carb. or something is preventing it. It doesn't feel like a sputter, or bog, or leaning out....just that the throttle doesn't go far enough. I hope this helps.
Thanks,
-Gary

This could be a long shot but if the boat is in the water all the time and it gets progressively slower, you may have some excessive algae build up on the bottom which is slowing you down. I gained almost 5 mph one summer after cleaning it. Doesn't sound like much but it's top speed was 24 mph!

You should clean your carb and change your fuel filters , and clean your flame arestor out . I done that to my boat and picked up 5mph on gps . Good luck

could also be waterlogged floatation. a boat can gain an amazing amount of weight from that. and it would progressivly slow you down the more the boat was in the water.

I'm not familiar with your carb, but if it is a 4 barrell maybe the secondary barels are not opening or not all the way. First check to see if the butterflys open all the way, maybe a likage problem.
