While I am here asking questions, the steering wheel has some play in it left-right, similar to worn tie rod ends on a car. Doing a bit of troubleshooting, I can see where the cable enters the power steering valve/actuator assembly, there seems to be some play. It appears as though the innards of the valve block is loose and sliding a bit with the cable before catching, but I caveat that with the disclaimer that I know nothing about marine power steering.

Normal. Steering on boats is never as tight as it is on a car.

I can appreciate the fact of less responsiveness while in the water.

So the play at the actuator (what raised the uh-oh flag) is normal?
