{Post a picture of the motor for quick identification.----A 4 cylinder MERC 300 might be a 1960 model.

Make sure the transom heights match up. If the boat is a long shaft and the motor is a short shaft, then it's a non-starter. Extension kits for those old Mercs are rare as hen's teeth...

It is a shorty, thought about the extension...hmmm.
I've got a lot to learn about console hook-ups. I guess I'm in the market for a motor. It's rated for a 80hp but that's way bigger than what I need. What is recommended to push this 16'er?

I'm a fan of the old 4-holer Mercs of that era. Originally white with chrome and black trim - very sharp! If it won't work on your Starcraft, you might have to find another boat for it and make it your Sunday driver. ;-)

I had a 16-foot Starcraft Super Sport (similar hull, more cockpit stuff) and ran a 35 Evinrude Lark on it. It was fine with just me in it, and maybe one passenger, but quickly became sluggish if I added another passenger or some gear. The boat became a perfect set-up when I put my Johnson Stinger 75 3-cylinder on it the following Spring... I would think any of the later model (1980s & up) Johnrude 2-cylinder 40-60hp models would do just fine on your hull.

i wouldnt waste the time effort or energy on anything smaller than 65-70 hp honestly if i were gonna keep my 16ss I would add chine bracing and find a newer 90 hp 3cyl yamaha to put on it. Thought about putting my 115 on it for a moment then realized its a boat not a rocketship

chine bracing? I have a lot of things to learn, which of course will involve lots of questions. Looks like I've got some trading material at least. I'll keep your suggestions in mind. Thanks guys. I've started a thread on the boat too. More Q's. :)
