Merc 4.5

Hey Gang, my brother purchased a 12? boat over the weekend and it has, what appears to be a 1975 Mercury 4.5hp (#4111184) on it. Not knowing anything about the Merc?s, I got it started and it makes a clicking noise while idling in neutral and I don?t see it peeing water from anywhere. It was submerged in water, because I couldn?t find the water intake port, and I only ran it for just a few seconds. Any ideas where or if it has one?

I bought a Clymer manual today and it does not go into detail on the cooling system route. I did find that the intake port was under the anticavitation plate, but no luck on an exit port.

Also, I noticed that the shift lever only operates the shift shaft one direction. It?s like it will only go into one direction of gear. I plan to change the water pump and service the lower unit, just thought I would ask for any insight on the issues

When reassembing the engine have both in the same gear, it sounds like someone else may have had the unit off and not realined when assembling the thing
