Folks, I have a 1991 40HP Mercury that takes a number of cranks before it finally starts. Once she goes, its full speed ahead.
Question: From the key, I hear the CLICK for the choke, but it doesn't seem to be "working". If I engage the choke when running, it stalls the motor. Weird.... any ideas?? CF

Re: merc 40HP choke question

Are you pumping up the primer bulb? It takes fuel pressure to squirt gas from the primer. If the motor isn't providing it (it can't if it isn't running), then you have to supply the pressure by pumping the primer until it's firm.

Re: merc 40HP choke question

I have been experimenting with the Primer bulb.
It appears that I am getting backpressure into my gas tank (YES, its in the right direction).
I will invest in a new primer bulb and report back.

Thanks. CF
