Do the 454's have solid or hydrolic lifters??

My engine started a slight tick and it sounds like lifters???

Thanks for you help!!

I have a 98 crownline 202 454 merc and brovo 1 with captains call through hull exhaust added. It runs great just has a slight tick from the valve cover area on the boat drivers side rear.

My 97 (GEN VI) 454 is a roller engine.

If you have a ticker it might be a stuck lifter...(or stuck valve)

If I install 1.7 or 1.8 ratio Roller rocker arms do I need to upgrade the springs??
Will I be close to hitting the pistons? Is it worth the effort??
Anyone tried this before?

Maybe not on a "stock engine" ...... The Mercruiser 454 doesn't really need to breathe much better than it already does with the manifolds available.

If you went to different (maybe aluminum) heads, stroked it, bored it, high dollar aluminum (ex) manifolds (or $3000+ SS headers)/risers, Then it might be worth it to use higher ratio rockers, associated camshaft, (and bigger valve covers etc)

I would give the whole mess to the machine shop to determine though.

On a stock engine, I think you'd be wasting your time (and money) for a negligible HP increase that would give you little, if any, speed increase.

They look cool though!!

Go over to http://offshoreonly.com and look around there. They're always talking about BIG HP engines and modifications.....

What I was looking for is a lopey Idle. I thought instead of camming it, I could do the rockers. The boat dose 63 mph already on the river here that fast enough, just want it to sound better and if I can get better low end power that would be great too. Any info Is greatly appreciated!!

I don't really know what exactly causes the "lopey" idle. If it's overlap, then you don't want it unless you're planning on running dry stacks. Excessive overlap will usually result in reversion...... and with a "wet" exhaust", your lopey idle will be followed by hydrolock!

This is all High School stuff you are taking about.
If you want a loppy sound, build an engine with it. Keep the original engine around so you can put it back in when the new one wont do what you want it to.

You can get a big square cam and rocker ratios and yatta, yatta. And your not gonna be happy. If what you have isnt getting you warm and fuzzy get a Cigarette boat with 4 engines in it. That otta twist your crank.

Tha is exactly what it is. That with low RPM's causes lose of vacum and bad fuel vaporization, poor fuel burn at idle and low RPM, and so on, and so on.

You get the idea.

The 30' Baja have the sound I'm looking for and they run wet exhaust and come factory like that. How do they do it??

Ayuh,.... Lopey idle,+ Low-end Power are Exact Opposites in the world of Cams....
Like Rick said, a Lopey idle gets you Hydro-lock,+ Broken motors...

Btw,.... I believe you'll find that 1.7 rockers are Stock on a BBC...

Buy a cd of a Lopey Idle,+ play it Loudly....

I dont know what they sound like, but
You can start with running the exhaust out the side of the hull (if that is where the have it). Then if you really feel the need, try turning down the idle, that may get you a loppy sound. My 3.7 will idle at 400, (have not tried that in the water yet) and she jumps and bucks and snorts and sounds kinda cool.
You can always go with headers that exit out over the top of the boat, then you dont have to worry about it taking a drink of water and lump up the cam till she wont run.

If it is a roller cam in your bullet, they can do different things than a flat tappet. Im not a cam guy, I just know you can go a ton bigger and way longer on the duration.
Im not saying dont do it, im saying build a new engine and do it up.
That way you can play now and have a spare later.

Well, we all do in time....... by the way, please don't take some of the comments that are somewhat sarcastic too personal ...... These questions have been asked so many times that they do get somewhat....shall we say redundant? (as do the answers!!)

If you want to start a good one.....start an oil thread! That'll burn up a hundred posts or so!!!;):p

Believe it or not I would like to do the same as you (more power)

I am looking for a 502 that I can put aluminum heads/manifolds/SS risers etc on.

shaving 2-300lbs off the back of the boat will increase performance too!!

Cheers,

Rick

Is a 502 just stroked 454? or are they completely different blocks?
