Merc 470 exhaust preventive maintenance.

In a thread by The-Tinman preventive maintenance to the exhaust system is mentioned. ( "Preventive maintenance on the cooling system (that includes the exhaust) keeps that from being much of a problem and keeps water out of the cylinders.") What is considered preventive maintenance on the exhaust?

Preventive maintenance after an overheat, as in that thread, includes pulling the exhaust elbow, replacing the gasket and checking the gasket surfaces while off. Checking the exhaust hose and flappers to make sure they aren't burned up and damaged is what you would want to know most.
