Re: Merc 470 having some MAJOR issues...

Hey guys, thank you all SO much! I will soon be pulling the engine out completely. I need to do some repair work on the engine mounts, as well as the actual boat floor itself ans figure I may as well do it all ya know. At least this way once out I can clean her up and ensure she is doing EXACTLY what I fear she is doing. I used coolant..NEVER have I used plain ole water in there...I never did pull the plugs yet, but figure i will just pull the whole engine. Like i said, that way I can replace ALL the components and NOT have to worry about a thing out on the water.

Also, no one's addressed that this knock might be gimble bearing/u-joints. Seems that if this was major engine damage, it would be getting a lot worse with as hard as the OP's been driving it.

I was thinking that too. I'd definitely pull off the outdrive before diving into the engine.

I had a 1980 470 that I ran for 12 years. I had a partial seizure when a thrust bearing bolt dropped into the oil pan. I had the machine work done, but never got around to rebuilding it. The engine is a Mercury block, Mercury driveshaft (with custom fitted bearings), Ford V8 big block bearings and rods, Ford 460 head and AC/Delco electrics. I still have a new gasket kit, a reconditioned head and other good parts in storage.

As old as this boat is, a good used engine for a low price might be the least frustrating way to go. A Glasstron is a premium hull, and worth putting some $ into.
