Bought 1983 Larson Citation with mercruiser 470, 170HP 2 days ago. Took it out yesterday. Had trouble getting it to go in reverse. You can here a clicking sound like it's spinning but not engaging. This also happened a couple times when shifting into forward, but most defined trying to go into reverse. I did get it to go into reverse a couple times out of about 12 tries. Called seller and he said he didn't have any problems with it, he hadn't used it in about a year.
From forward I put the lever into neutral for about 20-30 seconds, then shifted into reverse, when I heard the clicking sound like it wasn't engaging or trying to engage. If I pulled back on the throttle further engine would die.
The couple times it did engage it appeared to work fine. Other than that the engine and drive train appeared to work fine, other than as I said the same thing happening a couple times in forward.
Was wondering if maybe I was doing something wrong. After years of boating I'm still a novice when it comes to the mechanics of boating. I was a certified auto engine mechanic about 15 years ago, so I'm no stranger to mechanics and have a shop full of tools.
So please help if you can.
Thanks,
Rich
