2000 Crownline Deckboat with Merc 5.0 carb engine.
Sometimes will start and idle fine but when shifting in gear, will start popping through the carb. Other times when starting, the engine starts backfiring instantly. I cannot get it to smooth out at any throttle. This just started after running fine last week. Any help will be welcomed.

Thanks Bond-o, changing the filter was the first thing I did. But now I found a more serious problem. I was about to remove the carb to inspect what the inside looks like. While I was removing the throttle linkage, I heard water dripping in the bilge. water is coming in under the outdrive housing. Any suggestions?

I got the boat out of the water. The shift cable boot is torn. Took the boat to the shop. No time to fix it. Thanks Bond-o, you and Don are truly generous with your time and knowledge.
