Merc 5.0- where is the serial #?

Hello, where should I be looking for the serial number of a Merc 5.0, carb, thunderbolt, v8? I'm in the process of draining for the first time, and I have found four drains. One under each manifold, and one brass plug on each side of the block. Wondering if that is all?

serial number tag is on a metal plate riveted to the side of the embossment just above the starter

What year is the engine? There might be a fifth drain plug in the elbow of the hose between the t-stat and the water pump.
I have a 2009 Merc 5.0 TKS and there are 5 drain plugs. 2 block drains, 2 manifold and the elbow by the water pump.

Not sure, that's why I was after the serial. Boat is a 1996. Engine looks too clean to be that old, but who knows? I will check that elbow - thanks.
