Posting this tool I made to help show in what direction the motor must be moved after the motor is reinstalled.
Using a input shaft, you remove the yoke area and drill and tap for a removal bolt ,no particular length
Next you remove .125 of material from the shaft. .125 or 1/8 inch. this shaft is now 1/8 inch undersized in relation to the gimbal bearing.
a 1/8 inch welding rod can be used as a rough gauge to center the shaft in the gimbal bearing by shifting the engine, followed by the actual alignment bar.

I'm confused. How am I lining it up? Am I still looking at the stern drive when I'm inserting this? What am I looking at?

What's my focal point? The bolt head?

No, your looking in at two circles the shaft will be smaller than the gimbal bearing so you look in and try to get equal distances around it.

the modified shaft is now 1/8 inch smaller dia. than the gimbal bearing I.D.. this works best when you have pulled the motor for coupler replacement.

The very first thing you need to do is remove the top locking nut off each side mount, then lift the engine (just slightly) using the front lifting eye on the thermostat housing and even up the side mount nuts (so they are the same distance from the lower side of the mount).. That way you'll know the engine is sitting evenly on the rear mounts (I assume you've torqued up the rear mounting bolts).... Then lower the engine back down on the nuts.... Then insert the aligning bar or the modified shaft Doc showed you.

You're looking to ensure the whole bar is central in the bell housing... If it's low, then lower the front engine mount bottom nuts on both sides (evenly)...

The way I do it is to tighten up the rear mounts, then lift the engine on the front lifting eye and run the lower nuts all the way to the bottom. I then use the lifting gear to slowly lower the front of the engine until the alignment looks close (looking at the coupler through the gimbal bearing). I then run the nuts up to the bottom of each of the side mounts until they JUST touch it. That gives me a starting position to go with the aligning bar... Then it's just as I did in the video...

Not science, no mystery, not difficult....

Chris.........

This forum is about engine and drive repair, might want to post that question over in the Boat Topics (NOT ENGINE) forum.
