Merc 50 high idle

I have a 98 Mercury 50 four stroke.

I took it out and the idle is very high, at 3000. I had just used it for fishing two Saturdays before so two weeks it had not been used. The last time it ran perfect.

Here is what it does, starts just like it always has but at high idle. Stays at high idle. I ran at WOT for a bit and didn't help.

Any thoughts would be appriciated.

check the carburetor butterflies are closing fully. Throttle arm that rides on the cam may have slipped throttle cable adjustment out. High idle lever on shifter problem Trigger linkage or broken attachment ring. Just a few things to check. Timing will affect the idol. If the carbs are closing correctly then I would look at timing the issue

I have a yamaha 50 that's the same engine. Had a similiar problem that turned out to be in the auto-choke system. Don't know what exactly ( think I paid for a solenoid) cause I had it fixed at the dealer. Wasn't bad as I remember less than $200.

Interesting on the choke issue and yes I believe that would do it as well
