merc 500 50 horse year ID and problem

Help!! Have a merc 500 50 horse with Serial #6148965. Need to know year. Also having problems. Starts and runs until I try to put it in gear. Dies. Changed gas. Coil and compression are fine. Mechanic says it's running on 3 cylinders and I need ignition module, but I don't know since he says $300. Any comments appreciated.

mine is 511**** and is 1978 so you must be close to that, i had two cylinders missing out of four and the switchbox got changed and then the stator, now it works like adream, see my thread http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=262913
