merc 500

i was given a merc 500 sn:3239557 and it needs a tune up so i wonder what year it is....and what plugs to use...shall i use 50:1 mix? i never worked on mercurys before and this inline four looks a bit strange to me.....is it a good engine? and what is wot rpm? any help please... thankyou in advance..

I have a Merc 500, sn 3241205. I believe it's a '72 or '73. I would guess that yous is a 1972.

Hey unicorn, I had a 50hp merc that my dad bought in the 70's. Serial# 8004788. Its not on the list, were aussie models different?<br /><br />Sorry for jumping on the thread.<br /><br />Aldo

Aussie models are not listed anywhere that I know.<br />Only USA ,Canada, Europe. <br />However, I have a few cross references to them by various sources.<br />There are couple of other methods to find the year. Go to www.myfishingpictures.com and look at my collection of Mercs. The cowlings are all different and very unique.
