Merc 60 4 stoke won't go inot neutral

Hi all,
I have a 3 year old Merc 60hp 4 stroke. It has low hours on it, worked fine until yesterday. Fiance tried to get it into neutral and it would not go, and it is idles much higher than it did. It has reverse and forward. And will go into neutral if we shut it off and put it in neutral, but will not shift into it while it is running.
