Re: Merc 60 idles hot on stand

That kitchen motor is way cool. I once was scolded for building a 78 model Chevrolet 350 in my bedroom of my parents house. I brought it in in pieces and had a problem when it was time to remove the assembled engine. Ran that motor for 10 yrs after installing it in the impala. One question. Does that motor have a boat to go with it? or will you just watch it run in the house?

I've got to tell ya'll, I won't post on a thread unless I think I can help in some way, but I just had to say this is one of the funniest threads I have ever seen on here. I am cracking up. WYO...I wish you luck! BTW...Nice stand.

Smedley

Hey good to see this forum back; you never know what you'll miss till it's gone. Yes the kitchen motor goes on a boat. Late fall I bought a 1990 18' Valco Bayrunner from Yellowstone Park (government auction). Since then I've got a bit more into it than I originally planned as with the jack plate and a fuel tank under the middle seat. And the 15' outriggers and the downrigger. It's rated at 60 hp so that's what it gets plus the 7.5 Merc kicker from my 12' mountain boat. It's my big lake fishing boat and the grandkids can't wait cause it's f cold here.

Hi wyowoodwrkr,

i had something to ask you (now that you know how to post pics!): up here, i do a lot of musky fishing i.e. trolling aroung 5mph in 2-8 ft of water, so the skeg on my engine is a bit "rounded" by hitting rocks and dragging on the bottom.

I plan to rebuilt it to is original shape with some aluminium welding and grinding but i need kind of a template. Has you had the exact same engine as me, could you please post a close-up pic of your lower unit?

Here is mine:

Thanks!

Here's a nice one i caught this summer:
Man I wanna go musky fishing; we don't have them here. That's beautiful. Not the best pic of my skeg

, you don't seem to be missing much, it's 10 1/2 inches from center of gearbox bullet to bottom. 4 5/8 in. from center of bolt head below prop to end. A bit less than 3 in. along bottom edge. Good luck.

Thanks a lot. Bottom of mine is now approx. flush with the outside diameter of the prop, and then not doing is job to prevent prop chipping, as you can see.

I figure that i had to add what's in red, so the bottom of the skeg will be approx. 3/4 to 1 in. below the lowest point of the prop.

Thanks again!
(And here are some others 'skies)
Re: Merc 60 idles hot on stand

Christmas Day

If you have a strong stream from the tell tale, you are getting water to the powerhead.

The solid alarm comes on when the head heat sensor hits 190F. It intermittently beeps on low oil in the tank. Your thermostat should be around 120F (number stamped on pellet on the bottom of the thermostat). Obvioyusly you are pretty hot when the alarm sounds solid.

The thermostat is located under the small cover on the upper left of the rear of the engine powerhead's water jacket cover....about 1.5" wide and 6" long as I recall. The thermostat is under the top bulge in the cover and the pressure relief is under the lower one. When you take it apart expect the pressure relief spring to fall out and be sure and replace it when finished. I used the existing gasket when putting things back together and just glued it on with blue RTV. Works just fine.

Take the thermostat out and drop it in a pan of water on the stove. From what you said I'd bet the water boils (212F) before the thermostat opens, if it opens at all......get a new one. (I had the same problem, did the test and failed it.) Malfunction duplicated.

Water will come out of the tell tale with the thermostat closed so you can't use it for an indication that the powerhead is being cooled.

Good luck and Merry Christmas.

Mark
