Bought a 1971 17' Caravelle fiberglass deep v-hull runabout, has an 85hp Evinrude, probably also 71 model but hasn't been ran in 4 yrs. We already own a good 88 model 60 hp Mercury. We don't know which would be the best, the Mercury is ready to go, but will it be enough motor for this boat? We haven't inspected the Evinrude yet to test out anything. Did all 71 Evinrude 85 hp have the hydro electric shift? We've never worked on an outboard motor. Thanks to all with advice.

all 85's 1971 had hydro elect shift, personally i would sell both and hunt a 115.

I wouldn't write off a motor just because it has hydro electric drive. I have one that has been run extensively over the last three years (since I bought it) and I have had no problems with the drive system. Bear in mind, also, that I live in a place where there is no "boating season" - I use my boat 12 months per year.

The key to hydro electric drive OMC ouboards, is how well they have been maintained in the past. If the gear oil has been changed on an appropriate schedule and water has been kept out of the gearcase, the solenoids and gear changing mechanism tend to hold up well.

To me, the biggest issue with these motors is the shift switch in the control box. If it breaks, you can have some difficulties, because it is an NLA item. I am not personally freaked out by this, because I am willing to set up an alternate switching system if I have to, but I can see how this issue could be a large obstacle to some.

My advice in regard to your motors is to run the 85 if it is usable. Spending some money on it isn't a terrible thing, as long as the shift system is solid and the motor is otherwise in good shape.

I guess my point here is - don't spend a ton of money on it, but run it as long as it holds up. You really have nothing to lose.

I doubt you will be happy with the performance from the 60hp. By the sounds of it the 85hp is not worth putting a whole lot of money into. You may be better hunting down another motor.
