I'm thinking of buying a 2005 ex-police 2-stroke 60hp bigfoot with 500hrs on it
anything i should be aware of with this engine before i buy it?

i'm also looking at a 130hp yamaha with 150hrs on it but its double the price

its to repower a 13.5ft fibreglass speed boat that is currently fitted with a v4 90hp johnson.

will the 60hp be enough to get it to about 45-50mph? and will the 130hp yamaha be too heavy (160kg) against the v4 johnno (130kg)

i'm leaning towards to 60hp for weight and fuel cost

cheers

What's the maximum HP rating for your boat? 130HP on a 13.5 foot boat is probably to much HP. I would think a 60HP would work alright although your speed goal will likely not be met. It would also help to know what year, make, and model boat you have.

Re: Merc 60hp Bigfoot 2005

the boat is an australian savage avenger 4.11m long made in 1983
it currently has a v4 90hp that weights in at 135kg and handles that fine
i probably don't want to go over 140kg and the bigfoot weighs 106kg
so yeah a 130hp yamaha will be too heavy
i have seen 115hp's on these boats but most of them have 40-90hp on them
i still want it to pull a single skiier out of the water and my dad's old 4.6m alloy boat with a 60hp couldn't do that very well and struggled to plane with 4 people

Re: Merc 60hp Bigfoot 2005

i bought the 60hp bigfoot. its a 2004 with 275hrs and very clean
its all fitted up and i get about 60km/h from it at full revs with only a 16in prop so i'll be fitting a larger prop soon. the boat actually is very flighty when at full speed so anything bigger than the 60hp would have been to big. very happy with it now and with the 16in prop pulling a skier is easy
