I really need some expert advice here folks. Attached are pics of the 60hp that comes with the pontoon boat I'm considering buying. These pictures were taken by my marine surveyor, and I can see some obvious issues. Can anyone tell me, just how expensive a repair this would be, and, what sort of detriment to boat performance could I expect if I didn't get it fixed. Your expert advice is very much appreciated.

Re: Merc 60hp Question(s)

All I see is a bit of missing skeg. Plenty of original skeg left to get a piece aluminum-welded back on or an aftermarket skeg replacer bolted on. Maybe $75-150 worth of materials and work at most?

I would want to know if the LU is OK (no cracks, no bad seals, no bent shaft) since he had to have hit something or dragged it on pavement to break the skeg.

Is there any way to tell simply by looking at the motor if there's damage to the lower unit? The boat is in Texas, and I'm currently in Manitoba, Canada. I'm considering buying the boat, but if the motor is a write off, I want no part of it. I'm assuming that the only way to be sure is to have the boat taken out of the water and then have a marine mechanic inspect the motor???

Broken skeg is pretty common. How long has it been running like that? Any mechanic can easily check for other damage and/or bent shaft. Prop looks good. Skeg repair is a do-it-yourself with an aftermarket part.

Like stated by Jeep Man , simple fix. Bent prop shaft should be easy to see just by turning prop by hand and watching prop for any wobble where it fits close to the LU and watching the out end of the prop.
