I may be buying this motor and I need assistance in evaluating it. I am non-mechanical guy with basic knowledge but wanting to learn. The motor apparently has been in storage for 2 years. The controls come with it, but no prop. I do not have a compression tester. It appears to have the usual scratches and wear of an older engine. What tests would you reccomend I do to test this enigne. It is not likely that I will be able to stick it in a barrel of water to test. Thanks for any help you can provide.

I wouldnt buy a motor without seeing it run unless you are given a warranty.

But make sure the engine flywheel turns and is not siezed. Ask for any maintenance records. When was the impellar last changed? Why is there no prop? Look over the motor carefully to make sure nothing is missing.

Might be best to bring someone with you that knows motors. Good luck and welome to I-boats!

well, just my opinion, but I wouldn't pay too much for it, even if it does get running. I have a '71 650 and have spent more than what it's worth on seals, gaskets, wires and little parts here and there. Mine also could use a new stator and ignition trigger which cost over $200 each.

Let me tell ya though, they are an absolute blast to work on. I was brand new at boat motors when I got mine and it was not hard at all to learn through this forum and friends and now I am constantly looking for new things to work on because I love doing it so much. If you're looking for a good time, get it... just don't pay too much for it :)

Don't ever buy a motor or boat and motor without hearing it running in the water running
