Hello- my Merc 650 (1963) i have determined has a cracked bearing carrier. That explains why the prop was sticking out from the lower unit a bit and not engaging the gears. So i got the prop off and researched how to get the darn thing out etc. Stuck at the moment on getting the carrier cover nut out. The nut is also cracked. The manual says there is maybe a locking tab (some models but not all, does not list which ones) but i find no evidence of one. I have been tapping on the tabs with a hammer/screwdriver and other items to get the thing to spin and it will not. Since nut is cracked anyway do i now bust out the drill and sacrifice it to remove it? Pic attached to show some detail. Thanks!

The nut should be a left hand thread I believe. Parts can be bought at oldmercs.com. Testing of the LU housing for cracks or damage should be don beforehand or all the $$ and time might be done for nothing.

Common on motors that had water in the lower unit and froze if you are in a cold area of the land.-----Drill the nut and break it out of there.-----New parts can be spendy so try E-BAY or some old time dealers.----Your location ?

yep.. what RacerOne said. Time to look for a new lower unit on Ebay as I did. Some guys will try and pin the bottom nut in.. personally I think its hoakie and not worth doing.
