i have 1969 merc 650 i replaced the throttle cables ...i started with the control at 12 o clock the motor was in neutral . then i adjusted the fairings nuts to screw post on the side of the motor.
i got in the water and when i shift it the engine would clunk shift to neutral to reverse and neutral to forward. so i adjust a bit more ....seemed alright ( still clunk when shifting).
i took her out and the after a couple of shift backward and forward the control would not respond it was stuck forward full throttle and i was about to to hit something i could steer my way out it, i tried to rock the control (single level control arm with throttle and shift in one box) it end up bending the cable by the motor which i didn't know at the time. so i cut the engine an steering, i still hit but not as hard as it have been. so later after get back to the trailer and home .
i unhooked the cable and turn the prop in slide right back into neutral and the all gears fine with the cable. so i reset the control to neutral and link & sinked again , i have not been back out yet. ps the control works fine unhooked and new cables.
what could be my problem? what should i look for? could the throttle be set to high causing the clunking in the shift?
