i have 1969 merc 650 i replaced the throttle cables ...i started with the control at 12 o clock the motor was in neutral . then i adjusted the fairings nuts to screw post on the side of the motor.
i got in the water and when i shift it the engine would clunk shift to neutral to reverse and neutral to forward. so i adjust a bit more ....seemed alright ( still clunk when shifting).
i took her out and the after a couple of shift backward and forward the control would not respond it was stuck forward full throttle and i was about to to hit something i could steer my way out it, i tried to rock the control (single level control arm with throttle and shift in one box) it end up bending the cable by the motor which i didn't know at the time. so i cut the engine an steering, i still hit but not as hard as it have been. so later after get back to the trailer and home .
i unhooked the cable and turn the prop in slide right back into neutral and the all gears fine with the cable. so i reset the control to neutral and link & sinked again , i have not been back out yet. ps the control works fine unhooked and new cables.

what could be my problem? what should i look for? could the throttle be set to high causing the clunking in the shift?

For the type of problem you are having, start by getting a OEM manual and using it

have you looked down your cables to make sure none of the sheathing is ripped, or torn? I had a similar issue on my 650, and noticed that the cable sheathing was torn in a couple of spots. Replaced the cable, shifts, and throttles up and down like a charm.

How loud is the clunk?

To: 73merchead
the cable are brand new and seem to be in good shape free from any problems
and the clunk is very loud when shifted.
thank you

Re: merc 650 link & sink problem

any one else note i have two books on this engine and have used them

i followed:

set the throttle against the idle stop screw, engine in neutral, the control in neutral , then you adjust the trunion nuts in place, to where you can connect without moving anything on the engine. i follow it from books info, it still clunked which it never did with old cables which: where stiff ,housing ripped and rusted. the operation was fine before replacement old cables just stiff.

Ship, What is the idle speed set to? If it is too high, the LU will suffer damage after a while. it may have inadvertantly gotten changed when the cables were changed.

i have to go and read up on how to check idle speed in the book
so i am not sure at this time. i do believe that there is an idle screw adjustment on the Distributor.

it should be about 650 rpm in gear, in the water, you'll need a good tach to verify. get up around a thousand and over and it will clunck pretty good going into gear

Re: merc 650 link & sink problem

i went out Yesterday at read the post and read the manual again and found the my idle stop screw was out from the stop plate which made the motor idle high than should have.

thanks for you post and to tashasdaddy who i have been email with.

What can you you guys tell me about attaching a tachometer to my engine, where dose it hook too?:)

My manual only says to use one ,not how to hook it up or anything helpful.

the book says idle 550-600 RPM
