motor: merc 650 1975 3 cyc.

while dismantling the powerhead, i forgot to mark down the flywheel so I can re-install it easier..

I did take the dist. off, center flywheel nut, and all the bolts around it (prob. was 8 or so little bolts around the center flywheel nut). since the distributor is out & the flywheel .. how do re-install / align the two?

i dont have to this anytime soon but its kind of tickling my mind...

thanks

The easiest way is turn the engine to TDC and line up the flywheel timing marks. the flex plate kits have a sheet in them to line up from the keyway to the marks and it eems like back in the 70s there was a service bulletion

You should have a pointer or cowling markings on that motor, to align with flywheel TDC. It is imperative that the flywheel be re-installed as it came off. Most flywheels have a series of vertical dots stamped around the perimiter to indicate #1 TDC.

If you move #1 piston to TDC, you can align the fixed reference pointer with the mark on the flywheel for TDC. You can then bolt it in place on the hub.

Next step is to position the distributer pulley. You should find an arrow visible under the top pulley cap, which should line up with the TDC mark on the flywheel. Line them up, then install the belt.

How do I align the flywheel with the center piece on the crank ?? becaus the center piece did not come off with the flywheel when I took those 8 bolts.. I had taken off the stator under the flywheel as well.. (with 3 wires).
