I have a late 70s early 80s mercury 650, 3 cylinder, 2 carb. I found a small 1/8" hard plastic line coming from the engine behind the starter and it leads up to a similar spot under the flywheel. I have no clue if it was a vacuum line or water line? Regardless its been damaged. Anyone have a clue what it was for? Thanks, Wyatt.

Not all fuel/oil gets burnt and collects in the bottom for re-use, the oil return-line that leads to the top and lubricate the top crank-bearing, it important that you fix it!

Remove the Starter for access (unless you have long needle nose pliers) install new hose make sure its sealed onto the bottom check-valve & top fitting

Thanks for the quick reply, I just cranked over the motor a few times and what squirted out of the lower fitting smells like gear oil . Its definitely a lube line to the top of the motor. Thanks again!

It's NOT gear-oil! it's oil/fuel mixture that not did not com bust and pools in the bottom and by bringing it back to the top it lubricates the top bearing and to be burnt off as its recycles through the piston cycle
