I am looking to remove my 65 hp outboard merc. So I can get at the rotted (black jelly) transom. I am having trouble/ have no idea how to disconnect the connections; steering, throttle and shifter cables, and hydraulic trim hoses.

I have tried to remove the steering I removed the large silver nut closest to the red steering calbe and slid out the inner tube a good 5 inches or so. But it would not come out all the way. Do I have to disconnect something on the other side of the steering setup? This is rotary steering I belive.
Any tips???

As for the hydraulic trim I am thinking of just taking the hoses out from the nuts on the trim pistions.

As far as the throtle and shifter cables? I looked in the motor and it looked pretty rough to disconnect them from that point. So maybe at the throttle control?? And just leave them dangliig while the motor is off?

Thanks for the advice...

The control cables are easy to remove at the motor. I don't remember exactly how they work but you should be able to figure them out. Seems like you turn a little tab and the cable lifts up out of a hole.
As for the steering cable, you take the bolts out of the steering rod and it should pull through. I can't remember anything causeing a problem. Maybe someone else can shed more light on the subject............Jerry

The control cables disconnect at the motor. Use a 7/16 or 3/8 socket and remove tbe nut that holds the throttle cable. Now loosen the nut that holds the shift cable, and turn the clamp until the cable end slips out. Now unhool the plastic clamp that holds the barrels.

As for the PTT, yeah, you need to undo the hoses at the pump. Easiest place. DIsconect thje bullet connector that is the trim limit switch. On the steering, you are on the correct track, Sometimes the steering rods corrode up in the tilt tube and some wigling and penetrating oil are necessary to get 'em loose.

Ok well I thought I would share the rest of the motor removal in case others try to the same thing.

The steering came out by hammering the rod on the other side of the motor. Used a rubber hammer (mallet) and then a socket extenstion for extra reach once the rod entered the steering tube.

The hyrdaulics came off easy, took them off at the trim pistions, leaked a lot of oil so have pan ready.

The throttle control and shifter cable were easy as well, inside the motor there was a plastic lever that held the screw adjustments into a lock well, pull up the lever, unscrew the rods at their end where they connect to the other control arms, then remove the assebly, try not to turn the screw adjusters, as it will most likley do a number on you idle...

now to move to the rebuilding forum and attack that transom!!
