Hello everyone. This forum looks like it's full of knowledgeable and friendly people, so I'm hoping someone can help me out.

I inherited a Merc 650 that I'm struggling to get working properly. After cleaning the carbs and putting back together, we took it out to the lake and it started up like a dream. It idled perfectly. It would go into gear no problem. But the problem came in as it would not move us forward at all. I'm a total newbie when it comes to motors, but there appeared to be a "Y" part that I'm guessing opens the carbs to let fuel into them, that was positioned in the middle of the, what I call, timing advance body. When accellerating, this thing rotates outward, but it was not grabbing/moving the "Y" that I assume opens the carbs up. I positioned that "Y" between the timing advance body and now when I hit the accelerator up front, it moves and also moves the "Y" with it. This is how I believe it to work, but for some reason now it won't start at all. Starter picks up, but there is nothing now. Why, if the timing is correct, would it all of a sudden not start at all? And is my assumption correct that the "Y" is the fuel inlet for the carbs?

Also, what is the system of things that rotates when accelerating? Is that a timing advance mechanism? I'd love to learn exactly what it's called so I can speak more intelligently about what I'm working with!

Thanks all! This is my first post and I'm hoping to get this old relic working before the hunting season!

I appreciate anyone's advice.

Thanks much in advance!!

As Racerone already pointed out ; always mention the year / Cylinders / serial#
The "Y" controls the primary & secondary pick up

You touched/messed with something you should not have done! unless you know what your're doing

BUT

Here's a link that will have the manual for your motor (you'll have to enable flash-player & print off what ever you need before it disappears)
