I'm having the exact same problem on my 1973 7.5 Merc. How did you get your to idle in neutral? Mine will only start in forward with throttle. Idle adjustment doesn't seem to have any effect.
Would appreciate any help. Thanks

Motor tries to start, runs for maybe 5 secs and won't idle, in the normal, neutral, "start position". Starts right up if in forward gear and stays running with throttle opened up in barrel but when throttle was back to idle, it would die immediately. Looks like it's wet under the carburetor. I also had to replace the original venturi with the newer larger ID version. I'm thinking that is why I have the choke out about a quarter for it to run. Will a larger main jet solve the problem? Motor doesn't respond to idle adjustment either.

Also not sure if I've connected the stator coils to electrical module correctly. I connected them the way I found them with both yellow wires attaching to the center screw but the manual shows the low speed red wire attaching to center screw.

1973 Merc 7.5 hp won't run in neutral

Because I keep asking questions on old posts, I decided to start a new post. Trying not to be too confusing. I'm working on a 1973 Mercury 7.5 HP, S/N 3733058, which won't start in neutral. Motor tries to start, runs for maybe 5 secs and won't idle, in the normal, neutral, "start position". Starts right up if in forward gear and stays running with throttle opened up in barrel but when throttle was back to idle, it would die immediately. Looks like it's alittle wet under the carburetor. I rebuilt the carb and also had to replace the original venturi with the newer larger ID version. I'm thinking that is why I have the choke out about a quarter for it to run. Will a larger main jet solve the problem? Motor doesn't respond to idle adjustment either. Also not sure if I've connected the stator coils to the electrical module correctly. I connected them the way I found them with both yellow wires attaching to the center screw but in a manual that I found it shows the low speed coil red wire attaching to center screw.

Thanks for any help.

Well, you swung the other way.

Please use one thread for the same problem. Wanna talk about confusing when more than one thread is active on the same issue - It doesn't work.
