Hi all you experts. Can you help an Aussie novice? I have a 15'3 fibreglass half cabin of mature age with a Merc 75 hp 4 cyl unit serial number 943625. The transom also seems to have a massive (thick) aluminum angle running along the top of the transom.
2 questions. Can anyone tell me the age of the motor and 2, what is the risk of losing the transom and hence the motor? There doesn't appear to be much flex in the transom itself (a few mms)
Thanks

i check oldmercs.com but didn't locate number, please recheck. as far as the transom, drill a couple of small holes, good wood will look new, rotted wood will be pulpy, and possible wet. fill the holes with 3M 5200 or marinetex.

Re: Merc 75hp 4 cylinder

My old Wellcraft has an aluminum channel across the top of the transom also. I guess some used it for strength. If your number falls between 9427676 - 9444515, then it's an 1985 model. As tash said, you may want to check the transom to make sure the wood is good though. Better to be safe...

Thanks a lot guys. That helps with both the age of the motor and the way forward with the transom.
