Bryan, I am basicly in the same boat as you (haha) - no really for me it is more like Whaaaa - but with a 95hp merc from '67 ser#2124524- see my other posts - you can find them with a search of my name. Wanted to say - looking over your thread, gives me a great plan of action to deal with my no spark situation, alabet self inflicted, seriously, good luck and a thanks to all who sent in the other tips.

Well this really kind of a trying/frustrating ordeal. There last fall there were a couple issues, then the motor just quit one day. The fuel line connecting the carbs was sucking air, I pull all that stuff apart have new lines made believing it will take care of the problems... no such luck. So I am here with our very nice 1970 or so Larson ski boat in the water 40 feet from where I am sitting and it may as well be out of the water.<br /><br />I do hope we can get some leads on parts or a ign conversion kit without having to take out a 2nd mortgage, our 2 young boys would love to be out fishing and having Dad pull them on the tube.

Hello again, there is a green wire, the top terminal of the 4 on the box, I assume that would be considered the blue as it may have been blue on some, if that is incorrect let me know. I did the arc test as described a few posts up by Bob and there was no spark....hence a bad box from the looks of it. If I am wrong let me know. <br /><br />Does anyone have a lead(s) on decent priced switch boxes or salvaged ones?

Check Ebay for good used switchboxes. Some are guaranteed working even. Also, consider replacing your internal wire harness if it's old and crumbling, those cause a lot of "strange behavior"<br /><br />-W

Thanks for the tip. Also, the wirng is in very good condition. the boat has always been stored inside, we have had it for two years and know the previous owner (from new, but he is elderly and has dementia otherwise would have been a great help on this issue)<br /><br />Thanks,<br /><br />Bryan

Parts for the old merc can be found @ Oldmercs.com I ended up with a new rectifier and a switchbox / coil kit. followed ther instructions and was out $357.00 with the extra $40 being overnight shipping (I'm not one who likes waiting. Check it out - the switch boxes are delicate beasts and it was better than the over 7K I was quoted for a new motor. Check out the thread "Testing a coil from a late 60's merc, How can I tell if it is any good?" - might help

Re: Merc 80hp "800" ???Spark

Hello .... Again:<br /><br />After lots of looking, phone calls and e-mails I am in the same boat so to speak (no pun intended).<br /><br />My switchbox has a part number of 337-4411 and I have talked/e-mailed with dealers and everyone comes up with that part being "not available." There is an update kit but I cannot get a firm answer on which one is right. Also, one parts guy figured that switchbox should work as long it would be for a 4 cyl from that general generation of Merc motors. Any opinions on this. $$$ is a bit of an issue here as well, N.M.O.M (Not Made Of Money)

I went to their site, plugged in my part number and it kicked out the update kit at $600. Maybe I should go that route for $240....

Re: Merc 80hp "800" ???Spark

I am putting this CDI in and the instructions reference "clip off the ring terminals from the white wire on the ignition side (the side with 4 terminals), and the brown, white and black trigger wires."<br /><br />I have cut & taped off the red one as directed, there is a brown wire and white wire but there is not a black one that was on the switch box. The original switch box had the red, brown, white and a green wire.... no black.<br /> The only close black wire is on the coil and goes to ground. Is that the black one they are refrencing? I am in the middle of this and don't want to mess this up,so any help would be great!

They reference a brown, white and black wire from the trigger.... and a white wire from the switch box to be hooked up to the new CDI, I have the white from the switchbox, where do the other 3 come from, where are the trigger wires?
