Re: Merc 80hp "800" ???Spark

Ok....the 3 wires that come out the dist are all white, one went to the switch box, one goes to ground with a different wire and the 3rd wire is screwed together with another white one on a plastic bracket. I am trying to figure out which ones go to the new CDI there. The only black is a ground and came from the old coil. There is a green (common terminal from coil) that also went to the old switch box.....

Re: Merc 80hp "800" ???Spark

My CDI has 4 wires: a white, a white with red stripe, a brown and a black all with bullet connectors. Judging from an earlier reply post by "Laddies" on June 18th (above) this gem of a machine may be a bit on the rare side as it had a switch box with only the 4 terminals on the one side. 4 posts above or so I lay out the wiring configuration of those four. I am to believe that the way most of these motors were wired does not apply to my "unique" outboard. Understandably I do not want to mess things up and burn up this new CDI by guessing about anything as it concerns hook up.

thanks for you patience with this "ordeal."

Bryan, haveing never installed a kit on one of those systems I can't be of much help, but if you need Rapairs service number I do have it. I don't think there will be anyone there intill the 5th anyway. I will try to find the service bulletin on the kit and will post it if I do--Bob

Re: Merc 80hp "800" ???Spark

As requested in another thread I'm posting my experience with this motor.

I have a twin to this motor and had a bad switch which I replaced with the aftermarket Rapair brand CDI kit.

I bought the ignition kit from SeilerMarine.com
The Part # is 114-2986K1 - This kit replaces the NLA (no longer available) parts for the Merc 800 with a 4 port switch. Price: $380

Kit includes: 114-2986 switch box, R393-3736 Trigger, 4 cylinder trigger wheel, spacer, and bearings. Shaft and rotor are not included.

If you didn't get the entire kit and only got the switch box that will be leading you to the troubles you have identifying wiring. The replacement trigger has the new colored wires (brown, white, and black) which match the instructions you have. The red and brown wires from the harness get disconnected and taped off. Brown is the stock tach wire, and the red is the power.

Everything I saw shows that the old trigger has to be changed out to match up with the new switch.

hope that helps... I can maybe post a picture if you are still confused.

Thats what I am trying to establish tabaka it sounds like someone sold bryan he wrong parts, he needs either a 332-2986K1 or 114-2986K1 like you purchased, the number depends on company rapair or cdi--Bob

Re: Merc 80hp "800" ???Spark

Good Morning fella's:

Boy what a challange this is. I am sure some of you guys have been thinking I am a bit nuts. Of course this is one of those things that keeps throwing curve balls at me, nothing is what it appears with this motor.

I did get only the 114-2986 part, I did everything (that I knew of) with the dealer to make sure this is what I needed.

Now... a couple new questions:
Does the new trigger assembly have to have a new shaft & rotor?
Is it reasonable to believe that if a person knows what each of the 3 white wires from the stock trigger go to and how they should fit to the colored wires on the new box that this new CDI as it is would work?.... I guess what I am saying... is the new trigger assembly a "must have?" I now know of a fella that built his own CDI and he may have info the on the stock trigger wires.
Boy, this thing is really wearing me down. About the time I see a spot of light the power goes out... again.

Thanks for you all your input guys, this a bit trying and I do appreciate your help greatly.

Bryan

Re: Merc 80hp "800" ???Spark

stock trigger wires have a different function or voltage or something is what I read somewhere... damned if I can remember where though.

I re-used my original rotor shaft. The only trouble I had with the trigger swap was getting the spring between the distributor body and the economizer collar off. The pin on mine was basically fused into the old body.

Hello:

Just to cover the base we are checking on the compatibility of the original trigger set-up just to make sure and won't do anything in haste. As I said before, we live on a lake and want to enjoy the boat but don't tons of $$ to spend on this deal. Hence our desire to make double sure that the new trigger is an absolute requirement. I will keep you posted on this and if any of you have additional input it is appreciated more than you can possibly know (by me and also my 11 & 6 year old!)

Thanks again.

Re: Merc 80hp "800" ???Spark

I just installed a 114-2986 CDI module on my 79 Merc I6 90 HP. On my motor, I had 3 wires coming from my trigger/distributor: Black, White, Brown. The white looked a little tan, but it is white. These wires get the ends snipped off and new bullet connectors crimped and soldered onto them so they connect to the same colored wires on the new CDI. The white wire on the other side of the old switchbox gets the same clip and splice treatment to the white with red stripe wire on the CDI (it comes from the bundle of wires that come from the big harness plug on the other side of the engine - key switched 12V).

Sounds like you don't have the right trigger in place, or the wires aren't labeled the same. I'm assuming that you have key switched 12V+ somewhere, which you need for the white/red CDI wire. The fat red wire that powered the original switchbox is no longer used - ditch it, or tie it into the + terminal on the rectifier. You probably need to swap your trigger (I'm trying to find out how to do that cuz I think mine is toast). If you have the right trigger (mine's a 393-3736), it should wire right up. You'll need the 4 window plate instead of the 6 window plate, I guess. Good luck with it, and let us know if you manage to get that trigger swapped out!
