Hi everyone

I have a 70s (I think 73) Merc Thunderbolt 850 and it's running great. However it's a real heavy :censored: to raise and lower.

Can I install power tilt where the assist cylinders are? Does anyone have recommendations for make and model that would work?

Thanks!
J

The Mercury Power Trim for that motor (if 70s vintage), doesn't directly replace the shock absorber cylinders.

There are brackets that mount to the top shock absorber mount, and bolt to the transom. These hold the top of the power trim cylinders. The bottom of the trim cylinders mounts to the shock absorber lower mount.

There is also 4 hydraulic hoses, a power trim pump and reservoir that mounts in the boat and a trim harness and control panel.

The system worked well when new, but age and lack of parts hinder their use now.

You might try a after market PTT unit. I have never tried one, but I have heard some good things...

I have never heard of any other brand than CMC.

One other thing. Your motor has a non-standard bolt pattern. A PTT unit will likely have the newer standard bolt pattern. You will therefore need to drill new holes. It is probably no big deal, but you want to be aware.

If you do buy a PTT unit, you can fill and seal the old bolt holes in the transom and drill for the new bolt pattern. Then if you get a newer motor, you will be ready to bolt it on.
