I have a Merc 888 (Ford 302/#1 drive). Would it be possible (or advisable) to retrofit power steering? The only power steering now is how much torque the drive can exert ;-)

jasonnb,

Don't know about the power steering. However, is your trim tab adjusted correctly? That may help somewhat.

Possible, yes. Advisable, probably not. The parts to do this would be very expensive. You need the pump, the cooler, the actuator, and all the hoses and brackets. The best way to get this stuff would be off another boat with the same year and model engine. That could be hard to find. You might try one of the new "no feedback" steering systems by Teleflex. Unless you ust put a new cable in that boat , it probably needs one anyway.

The no-feedback sounds interesting. I need to change the trim tab as the on on it is simply a flat plate.

After perusing Teleflex's site, it looks like all of the NFB systems are for outboards???
