I have a 1965 merc 9.8 , good compression, spark, rebuilt pump & carburetor, new plugs, filed & gapped points. It will not fire. It started and ran for 30 sec - 1 minute then quit. will not start even when I squirt gas in the cylinders. I suspect weak spark.
Is there any remedies for weak spark other than replacing coils etc.? Is it possible to revive a coil ? Do not wish to purchase new expensive coils. Thanks in advance.

Re: Merc 9.8 weak spark?

Your 1965 Mercury engine is not a CD ign. system, it's a standard magneto. It's is never a good idea to file points it's a short term fix at best. The most common repair of a magneto is the replacement of points and condenser, if the coils are in question find a marine or small engine shop with a magneto tester the coils may also be tested with a OHM meter.

I ordered new points and condensers, will see if that helps.
