merc 9.9 choke problem?

I have 9.9 merc 1988 on a small pontoon boat, remote steering and controls. There is an automatic choke that seems to be not standard for this moter. It is operated off the key and pushes a small plunger horizontally about 1/4" dia against the side of the carb --it seems to cover a very small hole. Is this the auto choke? a small keeper washer broke and the plunger fell apart and I am trying to piece it back together. Clymer shows nothing of this choke or sylenoid. i'lltake any advice. Also should the manual choke override the electric

Any of this look familiar? There are a few different designs for that motor.
