Hi all, new to this forum, sure hope I can get some help....I've got a low hour '97 40 hp, 4cyl, ELPTO, tiller, power trim, elec start...Engine runs great, but if I run at or near wide open throttle, in about 3 minutes or so, overheat alarms starts to chirp then goes to a constant tone. If I throttle back to half throttle or idle tone goes away. I installed a new pump kit, telltale stream is very strong, even at idle, water flow from prop with earmuffs appears normal. This engine model has no thermostat, but it does have a temp sensor on the top cylinder's head. at idle I've disconnected this connection and no alarm sounds which seems unusual to me. I don't see any other temp sensors anywhere....any ideas? Is there any way to flush the engine cooling passages with the lower unit removed? I reason this must be done with care so as not to force too much water and fill up cooling passages and fill cylinders thru the exhaust ports. Maybe try low pressure air instead? Thanks for any help.
