MERC ALPHA ONE, GEN II Lower Unit Repalcement Gear Ratio from 1.84 to 1.5 HELP!!!!!

Smacked something horrible, broke prop cracked lower unit. A buddy has a bran new lower unit for an Alpha I, Gen II replacement (SEII) but it is for a 1.5 gear ration and I have a 1.84.

Thoughts on what this might do?????? Can I bolt it up?????? Pitch Down????? HELP!!!!!

Sure it will bolt up. But don't expect the same kind of performance as you had with the correct gear ratio. Get the right gear ratio you will be a lot happier.

Thanks for the quick response. I hit something hard, it doesn't appear to have damaged the upper unit but I took it to a reputable marina here in Columbus, Ohio to have a full diagnostic done ($109 bucks) and, actually, my insurance carrier said they would likely cover it! Its been a while since we've talked hope all is well in the world with you.

Do you think 109 bucks for a full tear down is reasonable?

The one thing I have found over the years, with hard strikes that breaks prop blades and bends prop shafts, the internal parts may look fine on inspection but within 50 hours, a gear tooth will break. Just something to keep in mind. Might ask your insurance agent.

Stick with the insurance claim.... why risk cobin it together with misfit parts..... if they dont cover then get a new lower from SEII!

Props work best overall when in a certain range of pitches. In order to stay in that range, they have different gear ratios. That is why there are different gear ratios for 4 cyl, 6cyl, and 8 cyl, yet all can use the same size prop.
