Which way is the open end on the fuel filter supposed to face?

Toward the carb?

or

Toward the fuel pump?

What do you mean by open end? do you see an if so arrow point arrow toward carb? Are you replacing the filter or just checking it out?
If you are talking about the small screen... open end toward pump, it will catch large dirt.

Yes. That is the one I'm taking about. The diagram I posted is different then the one you posted. I'll give it a try. Thanks!

It's dripping gas between the line nut on the carb and the nut on the line from the fuel pump. Right now, there is no gasket at that junction. Does anyone know if there should be?

It's hard to tell from the picture, but I believe you should have a flare fitting, and no sealer should be necessary. The flare may have a nick or imperfection... but you should be able to simply tighten the flare nut. Sealer would be a band aid at best and is only used with pipe thread.

The exploded view clearly shows a gasket, you goinna trust your life to a little dab of pipe sealant?

IIRC, there should be a copper washer there. Don't know how pipe dope and gas get along, but probably wouldn't try to find out.
