Just did a compression test on my 79 merc 115. #1-78, #2-80, #3-80, #4 -80,#5-80, #6-85psi. The manual doesn't say anything about bringing the motor to operating temp so I didn't but some other posts say you should. Who's right. Also what is the standard deviance in compression that is acceptable, is it 15% from the average.

Re: merc compression

Hi Smike
Compression hot or cold, in my opinion really doesn't matter. You would like to the results as even as possible, with in 10lbs is nice. The Idea is not so much the actual numbers, but the difference. If you have one really low reading, it would indecate a problem with that hole. Now as to actual numbers, this would depend on how the test was conducted, the acccuracy of the gage, etc. Your numbers seem a little on the low side to me. This doesn't necessarly indecate a mechanical problem. Did you test with the throtle wide open, have good cranking speed, use a gage that you have used before and tend to trust? Once you tested dry, did you squirt a little 2-stroke oil in each hole and retest? Did the results rise dramaticly? Have you done a decarbon treatment lately? 2-stroke motors don't want to run at all with low or no compression. Your numbers are fairly even (thats good).
I think I would look into all other possible causes of your idleing problems now. If you still can't get good results then readdress the compression issue.
