I have a 1150 thunderbolt with a mercontroller. The problem im having is that when i put it in forward gear it seems like it goes right in but then i have to travel almost 3/4 of the way open till i get throttle response. Going into reverse is no problem goes right in and i have throttle right from the get go! You can see that everything is moving if you watch where the cable goes into the motor. I have noticed that after it moves a few inches you can hear a "click" anybody have any ideas on this im at a loss. Also im not sure on what year motor i have serial number is 2838650 any help would be greatly appreciated. I just got the boat should probably decarb it. I took it out for a run at full throttle it went 35mph. That was pushing a 17' glassmaster seems like it should go faster than that. can anyone help ?

The year is 1970. Do you see your throttle cable move before it revs up? Check yor connection at the motor to see if it is moving the throttle lave there when the cable starts to move. Decarb is always agood idea. You might have to do a link and sync. Have you checked compression and spark?

I'm no expert on these models, but if it is anything like my 1976 1500 inline 6, you might want to look into the contoler box. If you don't find anything broken anywhere else, you probably have a worn our (CAM). That is one of the shifting pieces in the throttle box. Or the other shifting unit could be worn out. I had an engagement problem with my merc and the dealer mentioned that these 2 units along with the little plastic bushings do ware out. But luckily they are still available to order.

Make sure you grease everthing well when you put it back together though.

If you still suspect the cables, you may have a threaded lug that you can adjust to get the results you want.

I hope this helps.

As far as the speed, what rpm are you at when you are at full throttle?

what happens when you lift and lower the fast idle lever. whether forward, reverse, or fast idle the cagle is push the throttle linkage, to increase rpms. if it works fine in reverse, and with fast idle, i believe you ans the cam problem in the controller. i have a 71 1350. becareful opening the shifter, when i opened mine the wiring fell apart. had to install new external harness $180.00

one more thing,

Get someone to look at the the shift levers at the motor while you shift the throttle box. If when shifting from neutral to forward all the way to full throttle: the bottom lever (this is the forward gear engagement) starts moving and continues moving then stops just before the top lever (throttle) starts moving, then you proably don't have anything wrong. But if the bottom lever stops and the top lever does not move untill you push the throttle a bit further, then you mostlikely have a problem with the shifter box.

when i put it in forward you can hear it go into gear. Then when give it throttle it doesn't do anything till i get about 3/4 throttle. Then it takes right off as for rpm at WOT it was 3500. I had my gps which will give you the speed and it said 34.5 mph does that sound right? Also it goes right into reverse and you can throttle right up no problem. The idle lever works fine to i can put it in nuetral and give it gas. im going to take the control box apart to see if anything is loose or worn out I'll post my results thanks

No i didn't check compression or spark. It is a little hard to start but i have read how to fix that problem. once its starts you barely have to turn the key and it fires right up. It sounded nice and smooth looks really clean inside when i take the cover off. I don't see any butchering of any kind either! Thats always a good thing :)

Re: Merc controller problem or strectched cable??

when i lift the fast idle lever it works. When i put it in reverse it works. I took apart the control box i took a picture of what was inside. Is that roller supposed to be grooved to fit the cam. I moved the shifter while i had the box open and you can hear a definate "click" at the back of the motor. there is plenty of room for adjustment on the top cable. but wont turning that affect my reverse hook up also?

3500 is too low RPM for your motor at at WOT. The little roller fits in a groove in the cam when it is neutral. It is the neutral detente and lets you know you are in neutral.

Re: Merc controller problem or strectched cable??

the groove is for the neutral switch . what i'm thinking is you need to do a linc n sinc. email me at
tashasdaddy@comcast.net
tell me you need linc n sinc. this puts the carbs in sinc with the electrical timing. i neutral and reverse you only got to about 1/3 throttle of going forward. it now sound like the two components are not responding at the same time until yu get to 3/4 throttle.

Carb adjustment merc 115 thunderbolt

Carb adjustment merc 115 thunderbolt

Well i looked at everything when i would move the throttle control and i notice that my carbs were not opening all the way so i adjusted the one screw in the back and adjusted the stop on the other side so my carbs were just a hair short of being open all the way when i put it to full throttle now they open all the way only thing i have to do is try it on the water i didnt want to even attempt to do that while i had the garden hose hooked to it i put the timing light on it as was instructed my timing was ok but im thinking the guy before must have been a tinkerer of sorts hope this works also does anyone know what should my rpms be at wot ? thanks guys

Re: Merc controller problem or strectched cable??

Did you resolve your problem with Controller ?

I have a 1973 Merc 500 with a similar problem it slips right in to gear but it doesnt really throttle up till you move the contorller 3/4 the way forward.

I think my motor reaches max rpms i dont have a tach on the boat, but it sounds about right

The other problem is that when you push the controller all the way down it doesnt want to stay in position it creeps itself back some, so if you hold it down and steer with one hand you can go all out but if you let go of the controller will creap back bit then keep a steady speed.

Feels like a spring tension almost pulling it back..

Re: Merc controller problem or strectched cable??

im having the same exact problem. it goes into reverse and forward fine but doesnt really move till almost full throttle, and evn then it only goes 10 or 15 mph. it is a 80 hp mercury 800. i checked carbs, spark, timing, and the cam in the control box, all seem to be working. all i have been told is to keep adjusting cables by the motor tiil it works right. i have tried adjusting about 8 times in the water and nothing helped. any help would be greatly appreciated.d:)

Re: Merc controller problem or strectched cable??

Well i havent put it in the water since i did the adjusting mine also sounded good and i thought it was running full bore till i noticed my carbs were only opening 1/4 of the way hopefully i can get it out this weekend i had my gps with me to record the speed i was going almost 35 at about 3500 rpm that was wide open one guy told me i should be able to go in the 50 mph range with my boat and motor 17ft glassmaster if anyone has an answer to this problem we sure could use it thanks !!

Re: Merc controller problem or strectched cable??

my boat is the same way, I have a 75 merc 650 that will go into gear right away but won't start to throttle till near 3/4 of the way down, but I can reach WOT verifyied by rpm of 5200, and also physically looking at the carbs and seeing the butterflys open completely so I am fine with it and my engine is running pretty good...

Re: Merc controller problem or strectched cable??

You need a couple thousand more RPM. Has it always ran that slow at WOT? Are all your spark plugs firing? Let us know how ut runs after you put it in the water now you adjusted your carbs.
