Merc I6 mystery motor?

Hi all, first post here but I'm sure to be a regular so I wanted to say howdy!

I just bought a I6 mercury that is supposed to be a 115 HP motor. After going through many posts here and doing a careful search I learned some stuff but still came up empty-handed.

The Power Head has a little cast block on the starboard side of the engine block that says "Seriel No" but it is not stamped with anything. First I thought "oh great, somebody filed the numbers off" but I used a little paint stripper just on the surface and the underlying metal is virgin cast - no file job. So far I am to understand this is a replacement engine?

The black cover says Mercury on both sides and 1150 on the back. (115 HP, right?). The lower drive housing has a sticker on both sides that say "110 HP SIX". The front stamped shiny cover says "Kiehimer" (spelling?) and that is also on several parts on the engine such as cast into the fuel pump and a little sticker that says something like "lifetime Kiehimer spark plugs" or some such.

It is a carbed engine with a distributor and a red flywheel.

Can anybody give me some info on what to look for to figure out what I have?

I'm thinking it is certainly a Frankenstien motor, which doesn't really bother me, but I sure would like to know what the parts are so I can buy the proper parts and get the adjustments right.

Re: Merc I6 mystery motor?

Its probably a replacement powerhead like you thought. I had a similar problem-I bought an ex military merc 50. The military motors over here don't even have the casting for the s/n on the engine anywhere-or on the transom clamp. I ID'd it in the end by buying the seloc manual that covers all the mercs from 4-150hp and matching up the wiring diagrams.

Re: Merc I6 mystery motor?

Thanks. I'll buy a Seloc manual as I will need it anyway.

I did find a couple of numbers cast on this thing, cast on the block right under the center carb is a Kliekhiemer Mercury and 3(or8)48-5262. Also, on the transom clamp is 1440-1333. None of these numbers show up in the list on http://www.pfs-ware.com/kwast/merc_serial_number_reference_gui.htm

Also, what is the Kliekhiemer story?

Kiekhaefer

Sounds like a 70-72 115 block on a 66-67 110 leg.

And all the 99ci parts are the same for the most part, regardless of HP. Adjustments too.

-W

Kiekhaefer - sorry, no dissrespect, just the motor is way down in the shop..... :) I'm a serious car guy, build race engines and hotrods, but I don't know jack about the outboards. An engine is an engine though - right? I'll learn.

THANK YOU for the year and ID info. So, all the I6 engines are 99CI? If I'm reading that right, what did they do to hotrod it to 140HP?
