So 2 part question...
1. what exactly is the black lever on the throttle for? I thought it was to adjust Idle...
2. shifting into forward is a nice firm catch, even if it don't feel pretty I have a feeling it's ok... In reverse however it starts whining and I have to take the throttle about 1/2 way back before it will catch? something to do with the idle speed? What do I need to do to set the idle? Or do you think it's a clutch.
Thanks

Re: Merc inline 6 question

The black lever is for high idle. Used when starting and warming up. The motor should be at low idle when shifting, you will tear the gears and clutch dogs out of it shifting at 1/2 throttle. Don't ease it into gear and let it grind, shift firmly. Idle is set at the motor. Might as well get a manual before you start. The three carbs are synced together. Get those out of sync and it wont run right. The guys in the Merc forum are a big help also, post there for any repair questions. Good luck, Those are great motors and I love that distinctive sound they have.

Re: Merc inline 6 question

ok good that's what I've been doing with the idle... Is it possible to kick it too far forward when shifting since the shifter and throttle are one control?
