Re: Merc & Johnson

Merc and Johnsons are outboards, not IO so it called a lower unit that you want to swap, not an outdrive.
NO, you can't swap a merc lower to a Johnson.

Moving to Merc outboard forum.

Re: Merc & Johnson

Your friend "who knows of a guy who said" does not know what he is talking about, gary.

Johnson did not make outdrives, they made outboards, and their lower ends would not work with any Mercury outboard powerheads or Mercruiser inboard engines.

I suppose it is possible that what we have here is a multiple use of incorrect terms creating what looks like pure nonsense. If that is so get your terms straight and ask again. . .in the correct forum, not here.

Re: Merc & Johnson

You can run a Mercury Sportmaster lower unit on a Johnrude or Yamaha with an adapter plate and driveshaft change...

Re: Merc & Johnson

It totally possible as the engine could have been changed. Mercrusier did make a Inline-6 Gm 150 hp in this year range it it would bolt right in place to a Omc installed GM engine...

Re: Merc & Johnson

Be careful as if its the old Omc outdrive its a electric shift and parts a $$$, hard to find new and nobody will touch it for repairs (if they have good sense)...

Re: Merc & Johnson

So is it an outboard or an I/O? I am still not clear on anything. I would take the advise given and pass on it but thats just me. The $600.00 might be the cheapest part of the whole boat esp if it needs work. Good Luck.

Re: Merc & Johnson

I am new at boating so my boat terms may be off ,so once again its an in board ,motor inside boat not hanging off the back ,now the guy says its a ford
Mercury 150 hp with a Johnson stern-drive is the puzzel getting clear ,not for me ,but if he accepts $600 I,LL go see it.....

Re: Merc & Johnson

Mercury is and outboard. Mercruiser is an I/O (aka Sterndrive) don't confuse the two.
Johnson is an outboard only not an I/O (aka Sterndrive) OMC, however, was the parent company of Johnson, and OMC Sterndrives.
Ford was not used until 1970 by Mercruser, OMC didn't use the Fords till 74.
Now the fun part. OMC Sterndrives did have a model 150 in 1965 and 66, it was a Kaiser V6, not a Ford V8.
So what you are getting is basically a bunch of parts installed in a hull by a bunch of previous owners. What those parts are really doesn't matter. You will probably have to replace it all anyway. If Mercruser, the parts are NLA, if OMC, parts for the Kaiser are NLA, some stringer parts are available, but until you get the boat and can post pictures of what you have talking about it, using your terminology and the sellers terminology is a waste of time. You nor the present owner have any clue what any of it is or what it's called at this point. Which makes it impossible for us to give any kind of an educated guess on what you are so set on buying.

Ayuh,... Boats; 101;...

Outboards are vertical motors bolted to the stern of a hull....

I/Os, or Sterndrives are a motor inside the boat, horizonally, mated to an outdrive/ sterndrive mounted outside the hull...

Inboards are a motor inside the hull, turnin' a shaft through the hull to a prop under the hull...

Btw,... If the Ultimate Goal of your quest is to become a Boater, rather than a Projecteer,...

As I said before,... You D O N ' T want that boat.... :(
