Is it possible to use an eyebolt to lift a 2002 merc classic 75? If so what size?

Mercury offers a lifting ring specifically for that purpose.

You can find lifting ring, flywheel pullers on eBay relatively inexpensive.

Flywheel thread should be 1-1/2"-16

So that tool is required then...bummer. I was hoping to re-mount my engine tonight. I need to take it up 2 mounting holes before I went out to play/fish tomorrow...

You don't need the lifting eye, but it is the safest and simplest way to do it. There are plenty of bolts on the engine that can be used to attach a sling but you need to understand the risks and strength of the materials you used to make that sling. Whichever way you do it, have a buddy or two give you a hand.

I did scope out a couple that looked stout enough...but wanted to do it correctly to avoid pain, injury and potential for disaster! :p

An optional method for you to consider:

Lower the trailer tongue to the ground then support the motor skeg with a block, or wood etc. Remove the mounting bolts, with an assistant helping to balance the motor on its skeg while the trailer tongue is raised slowly. As the trailer tongue is raised up essentially lowering the boat's transom, you can then mount the motor in the new holes where you wanted to. Be sure to re-seal the holes well to avoid water damage.

That 75hp motor should be manageable with 2 people, especially if you're only balancing it on the skeg.

Go fishing ;)

I have a 99 90HP Merc and I think it weighs just over 300lbs, I suspect his is close to the same. I dunno about your friends but mine are too weak to manhandle that with my help. I am of course a monster and can almost do it alone. :)

I vote for getting a lifting eye, it is too bad of day to drop it.

Re: Merc lifting ring? Eyebolt?

AMD beat me to the punch on the trailer jack deal but if your boat is like most all other boats, when the jack is all the way down the transom will actually be inclined forward. What I mean is that when the outboard is unbolted, it will actually be leaning AGAINSTthe transom, making the job that much easier. I've even used a couple of C-clamps loosely on the bracket and transom to help hold everything in place in case someone gets fatigued. Truthfully, if you do it right, the only thing the helper will have to do is slide the bolts in the holes. The engine won't go anywhere.

I had my son machine a lift eye for me. May not look fancy but should work well and protect the motor during the removal. He made an extra large ring so a backup saftey chain could also be attached.
