Merc. mid-year changes

While doing research for spare parts for my '72 1150 kiekaefer / Merc. Feedback from some sources have given the impression that certain parts such as the L/U and the Powerhead itself, even though a '72, the part still would not interchange w/ my particular engine. Anyone know the truth on this?

Mercury has always built motor by serial number groups, most mid year changes are minor but not all. If there was a problem and it toke a major change they would change it in mid year
