I'm looking at buying a 16 ft. bass tracker with a 1990 merc 35 HP with oil injection. Frankly, I'm a little nervous not mixing the oil and gas and have heard horror stories where the oil injection sytem failed and the motor got trashed. Just how dependble is the oil injection system on this year model mercury?

Well, you didnt ask, but this combination is "NOT" going to make you happy. When you load it down with a fishing buddy and your gear, you are going to have to run it at WOT everywhere you go, and you are going to be lucky to stay on plane if you both are 200+ pounders. I think a 50 HP would be my minimum.

Now to your original question. The answer is: As good as your maintenance is. They are very dependable if you keep all the hoses in good shape.

Since there was no 35 made in 1990, I'll assume you have a 1989. That engine came with the "autoblend" oiling system. I'll reiterate a statement from a Mercury Training Seminar, almost verbatum:

Remove it(the oiler) and throw it in the dumpster. It cannot be made to be reliable, and you don't want your customer buying a new engine(from another dealer) with your settlement check.

I agree... remove the entire system from the boat and mix your oil(TCW3) at 50:1

The newer oil system are great! Engine mounted Mikuni oil pumps have been terrific, (although there have been "driving" gear failures on the V-6s) but those autoblends did nothing for Mercury's reputation of building fine outboards.

auto blend was on par with the OMC econo-mixer. should have ben named "gonna fail" but I guess the guys in marketing did not like that name. if yours has the mikuni block mounted pump then do the maint and keep pliable lines on it. if its auto blend dont run it just pre-mix.
the moral and rec center at scotts creek annex in Norfolk VA had a fleet of those boats for rent. 3 sailors and a cooler and they wont plane. 2 sailors and a cooler was iffy. thats why we had to drink fast so we could fish faster :) :) . so take it for a test with a load your going to carry to make sure its what you want.

 Well, ok, sorry, should have kept my opinion to myself

I was under the opinion that by 1990, they were the new system. ;)

Doesn't sound promising on the oil injection. The thing I don't like is the fairly narrow beam of this boat and the fact that there is almost no gunwale (sp) on it. I have visions of man over board. Thanks for the technical input guys.
