Re: merc or volvo?

Moved this to the Non Repair IO forum since it is a non repair question, and please don't post the same question in different forums.

Ayuh,... It's the age old, Chevy, vs. Ford thing,...

They both have their ups, 'n downs,...
Mercs are more common, so parts, 'n used parts are Much more plentiful, atleast in My area,...
Volvo's Huge Plus is the cone-clutch drives,... Bravo style, rather than the Alpha's dog-clutch style,...

Buy whichever, but if yer not a Diy Mechanic, figure out Who's gonna be servicin' it 1st,...
If yer nextdoor to a Volvo dealer, Go for it,...

I'm not,...

Heavy boat like that, probably pretty similar to my 270 'Dancer, if it only has a single engine it should be a Big Block motor (at least 300hp) along with a dual-prop outdrive of either brand. Anything less and you'll probably not like the performance.
Absolutely will use a lot of fuel so make sure your budget accounts for that: if you have to worry about mpg, look smaller.

I own a 1984 Merc MR-1 (functionally the same as Alpha 1) and a 2002 Volvo Duoprop. I like the Volvo better, but the old Merc just keeps on churning. As mentioned above, parts and service availability may be the deciding factor. There are definitely more of both for Merc.
