Just purchased a new 115 EFI called the dealer to see if I could use the Quicksilver inboard and sterndrive 25w40 I have left from my previous boat. He said that I needed to use the outboard oil which is also a 25w40. What is the difference between the two? At Walmart last night I seen a gallon of Quicksilver synthetic blend 25w40. It says on the bottle it is for outboards and inboard/sterndrives. The part # is 92-8M0061369.

Thanks,

Todd

Re: Merc Outboard oil

If it is not rated TC-W3 do not put it in a 2 stroke outboard. That is only one difference, but it is the one that matters.

Re: Merc Outboard oil

TC-W3 is Two Cycle water cooled oil. I think the OP was referring to a 4 stroke engine, in which case a TC-W3 oil would be a poor choice.

I thought a 115 EFI is a 2 stroke unless the OP wants to tell us exactly what he has. Now that you mention it I don't think Merc is still selling EFI 2 strokes any more.

Todd, tell us exactly what you have, please.

Re: Merc Outboard oil

Its a 115 4 stroke EFI. I think all the efi's are 4-strokes. the optimax is the 2 stroke.

I just checked the owners manual and it calls for the semi synthetic 25w40 oil. I am trying to figure out the difference between the outboard oil and the sterndrive/ inboard oil. Both are semi-synthetic and 25w40. The quicksilver oil at walmart was a semi-synthetic 25w40 for both outboards and sterndive/inboards.

Sounds like it will work

If it's any consolation, I've never figured it out either. My motor is still under warranty and I have to go to the dealer to get oil because aparently West Marine can't figure it out either and only stocks the inboard 4 stroke oil. I've seen the Synthetic at the dealer that says outboard/inboard but I've never used it and they've never offered it when I tell them what motor I want oil for.

Your guess is as good as mine on this one. I feel kind of dumb for not knowing.

You're probably wondering why I insist on running the quicksliver oil... My motors are under warranty and I won't give Merc any opportunities because they will take them.

I understand completely. I have a whole garage full of Castrol Tection Extra that I used in my other boat, truck and OPE, but I think I will spend the premium for the 25w40 for this motor. Does Quicksilver have a website where you can see a complete list of their product line? Mercury lists three 25w40 products on their site. 1 Stern/IO dino, 2. Stern/IO syn blend 3. OB syn blend. I am thinking that quicksilver only offers two, a dino for stern/IO's and the syn blend for both stern/IO and OB.
